Hawthorn Tree

There was hope on a hawthorn tree
And the sight of it startled me
I was caught unexpectedly
Into a memory of spring
There were notes on the evening air
Swept along by a breeze so fair
There were harmonies here and there
This is my favourite thing

Something to lift the spirits
Something to shift this winter’s remains
Something to sift the soil for seedlings
This early spring day

I could see all the daffodils
In their boxes on windowsills
There was snow on the verdant hills
Oh, what a beautiful start
There was dew on the grass so still
Oh, this season is such a thrill
I will breathe in the air until
I can feel hope in my heart
